Haďrdr˙er
Fresh Act September

80’s rock of the highest quality with a little tongue-in-cheek, this is what you get from Haďrdr˙er. The young Swiss guys introduce themselves and their band here in this Fresh Act interview.

Hello everyone, first of all, for the people who don’t know you yet: Who are you, where do you come from and what kind of music do you play?
We are Haďrdr˙er from Haďrgiswil and we are committed to 80’s rock music.

Why does this kind of music fascinate you? Which bands have inspired you? Are you being serious or are you making a mockery of the entire scene, as for example Steel Panther?
This kind of music spreads joy of living. This is what we want to pass on. There is a lot of crap out there, we don’t need to tell people that everything is crap. Our main influences are Def Leppard, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Queen and ABBA, but above all, 80’s pop music. We do take our music seriously; ourselves not so much. Besides, we are not really made for some serious posturing.

Your band has been around since 2008. How did you guys find each other? I would assume that it’s not so easy to find people in Switzerland who want to play 80’s rock music?
Actually, it is easy, no problem there. We found each other out of geographical convenience.

What kind of feedback have you received about your music? It’s not exactly a genre that finds many supporters in Switzerland.
In our experience, we have managed to excite audiences of all ages and genre groups about our music, always with a little wink of the eye. The number of supporters is growing. Some people consider us a bunch of big kids – they could be right in this point…

In April, you released your first LP, which is called “Off to Haďradise”. How did you get the idea for this album and how long were you working on it?
For two years, we were hiding at our rehearsal place, listened to every conceivable 80’s production and lived on “Milchschnitte” candy snacks and Capri Sun limonade. Unfortunately, we ran out of beer after two days. Migros doesn’t sell alcohol. So all I can say is: Fuck low carb!

You recorded this album without a record label. Do you think that it’s not really necessary to have a label nowadays and you can just do everything by yourself? What do you think?
In Switzerland, it’s possible to do it without a record label. Especially if you’re not that famous. In this case, you can at least sell your CDs at your shows and keep the money.
What should your ideal record label look like and what should it do for you? Is there is a specific company or person you would like to work with?
Desmond Child or Benny Andersson.

How about the song writing? Is it done in teamwork or is there one person who’s responsible for this part?
The ideas usually come from one person. Subsequently, we are working on the song together, so it’s teamwork.

What would be the ultimate success for Haďrdr˙er, something that would prove you made it in the music world? How do you measure success?
A pink night-liner and a gig on the moon - so loud so that no broadcast to earth would be needed, the concert could be heard from earth (with a little bit of time delay). – But there is a vacuum between moon and earth so it requires a medium so that the sound can be broadcasted, so this doesn’t work at all. – Shut up! Nobody likes know-all’s. – Wrong! Almost nobody.

The Internet – a blessing and a curse. Which promotional sites do you use in order to promote your band (e.g. Facebook, Youtube)? Which ones would you not recommend (because they don’t keep what they promise or cost too much and are ineffective)?
Facebook and Youtube. We’d rather use fewer sites for the band promotion, but use them effectively and offer something to our fans; quality over quantity. The best way still is a live gig and personal contact.

You’ve already done a few videos and your newest one is “Gone by now”. Whose idea was it to wear the chicken costume? I suppose Marco was very grateful to that someone? Where did you shoot the video?
The video required a fair amount of work and help from many people and organizations at various locations in Switzerland. The stadium scene was shot at the Swissport arena in Kriens.

Say, Dave, how do you explain 80’s rock and the slogan “Grow your hair”, whereas you have a short haircut?
Dave: You are right there. This is untrue. But I’d rather be handsome than true. Besides, I cannot grow long hair for professional reasons. I’m a pilot.
Rest of the band: I thought you were a salesperson at Mc Donald’s? – He told me that he was studying medicine. – He told me he was a lawyer! – I thought he was a fortune teller. – Guys, shut up!

It comes to ears repeatedly that bands from Switzerland have difficulties getting gigs in their home country and abroad. What do you think about that?
If you are being persistent, you can get gigs in Switzerland. Vitamin B (a network of connections) always works. And keep sending inquiries.

In your mind, what should to be changed in the Swiss music scene or in the music scene in general?

We’d need an official Swiss rock and metal radio station - with balls! When people request songs, 70% of the time, it’s hard rock or even heavy metal songs (AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica etc.).

You haven’t played that many shows yet, but how does the perfect concert venue look like to you? Where in Switzerland would you like to play?
Actually, we have already played many shows. However, we would like to play on a flying meteor, which would be flying across the Alps.

Last but not least: A fairy grants you one wish. If you had to sacrifice one thing that is important to you, what would it be?
We’d sacrifice the fairy and ask for another question. You’re welcome.

Thanks a lot for your time and I wish you all the best!
