On the cover Lou Reed gives the wise poet, the pale picture shows a face which has “Pass Thru Fire" written in. The sub-title promises "All Songs"
and that´s correct: On 461 pages there are the lyrics of all official Velvet Underground albums including "1969 VU Live", and Reeds solo albums up to "Timerocker" (1996). Reeds introduction essay is a Tour de Force through his songs, summarizing the essence of his stories within a few lines of text. The master himself did not only note the exact wording, but also turns the lyrics into graphics. Not all of that is genius, but very interesting for example when the lyrics of “Liners Notes" (“Metal Machine Music”) gradually vanish into a diagram, a blind text without any words or when other letters starts to dance. And so did I, listening to the old LPs.
