KRAFTWERK - This name doesn´t fall into oblivion that easily! Although the band from Düsseldorf don´t have a prominent position in the public for quite some time now they still belong to the most mysterious and fascinating phenomena in the music world. Mastermind Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider were always very keen on keeping up the mystery around the band and taking their reputation of an anonymous, inscrutable band to the next millennium. No wonder that the two weren´t too happy when already in 1993 Pascal Bussy presented them his manuscript for this biography. The author wanted to give the band a chance to make corrections or revise open facts. This opportunity wasn´t taken up by KRAFTWERK and so the book was published shortly after. Only then Schneider piped up with the scathing comment “The book is shit” which led to a heated debate with the publisher. The biggest criticism: most of the facts were imaginery. Well, for a band whose history consists to a good deal of rumours and speculations this was almost foreseeable. Accordingly, the reactions to the original version were split. One half was thrilled by Bussy´s book, the other half, so Bussy reckons, was only critical because they didn´t want to infringe the musicians.

Nevertheless Bussy wasn´t discouraged and now 12 years later the author presents a new and above all updated version. “Updated”, however” is a matter of opinion because Schneider and Hütter still aren´t characterised by open-hearted talks…

Bussy´s extensive knowledge about KRAFTWERK is mainly based on numerous interviews he did with members of the band and which were all done before the publishing date of the original version. Apart from that the author takes a lot of facts from interviews of colleagues. The lion´s share of the research goes back to the beginning of the 90´s when Bussy was in constant contact with the band.

In several chapters “Kraftwerk – Mensch, Maschine und Musik” tells the complete story of the band and in each chapter Bussy, of course, takes the chance to consistently dare the attempt of a look behind the scenes of the mystery. For the reader the problem simply remains; here and there you still don´t know exactly if this or that really happened the way it is described here. Should you believe the author or rather the band, even if the sources are said to be reliable – Schneider and Hütter will have their reasons why they dissent with the author´s works.

But whoever is interested in the history of the band, no matter if already fan or fan-to-be, can´t pass this book...
