The new album of the three Finnish cellists is a wonderful mix of hard parts and other melancholy, calm melodies, which evoke an end-of-the-world-type atmosphere. While on „Reflections“ the drums took some getting used to at times, on this album they blend perfectly into the songs and support the fast, hard sound, as well as the dark, quiet sound.
The first song of the album „Life Burns“, which is sung by Lauri Ylönen, is a bit unusual, though. It’s not a bad rock song at all, but the cello’s are very distorted and they lack the typical Apocalyptica melodies.
Opinions about Bittersweet vary quite strongly, perhaps a little bit less in regard to the singers would have been better... Oh, well.
There really aren’t any other points of criticism and even though the opening song „Life Burns“ is a bit unusual, Apocalyptica have released a truly beautiful album, containing only their own compositions, that deserves a lot of attention!
