I´ve felt for some time that Mortiis´ troll mask doesn´t fit his music as his style now a days is mostly related to the likes of NIN. Therefore I was happy to see the new promotional pictures whit the band where the mask has come off! I, for one, hope this is the new look.
But on this Soul In A Hole live DVD, recorded at Hackney The Ocean in London during the 2004 tour, Mortiis is still in full outfit with a nose that makes Barbara Straisand look like an Eskimo. Again, the appearance doesn´t really match the music but on the other hand the music kicks you in the groin so bad he could be wearing string bikinis and a tank top for all I care!
In his latest interview on STALKER.cd Mortiis is talking about the difficulties getting this DVD together and unfortunately that can be seen and heard. The sound quality especially in the beginning of the show leaves a lot to desire and the camera angles somewhat kill the intensity of the act. This has been tried to compensate with fast cuts that only leads to a feeling of the picture rapidly jumping from place to place. But after a few songs you get used to it (or they just had some better material to work with) and you can enjoy a very energetic show. Thrusting but yet melodic songs with a band that really keeps it together, with small back stage inserts in between songs, keep the tempo just right and the flow is there from start to finish.
The DVD also contains four videos of Parasite God, Mental Maelstrom, The Grudge and Decadent And Desperate plus bonus material with an interview with Mortiis, a TV ad for the album The Grudge, an Electronic Press Kit for the same album (the guys shortly talking about it) and a picture gallery with some old and many new pics.
If it wasn´t for the lacking in technical quality in the live recording this DVD would deserve extremely good points! 9/10! Unfortunately…
