After we have experienced more or less the successful resurrection of The Doors` Jim Morrison on Good Friday, thanks to the tribute band "Dionysian Band" at "Sture 21", on this Easter Sunday it was the turn of the Type O Negative tribute band "October Rust" - and with their performance at "Virgin Oil", they simply outshined everything. Not only everything that has taken place on this Easter weekend, but everything I have seen so far in this year when it comes to gigs!
Tribute bands are always a difficult task, especially for the person at the mic, and to represent Type O Negative`s Peter Steele is a very big challenge as the original has passed away just two years ago. Juha-Pekka "JP" Leppäluoto, best known as the vocalist of the meanwhile disbanded Charon, is not afraid to face this challenge. More than that: He aces it!
After it`s getting dark in the crowded "Virgin Oil", five men enter the stage. From now on, the stage is bathed alternately in blue and green light, and the stunning "Christian Woman" kicks off the show. Sure, the line-up consists of professional musicians only, such as JP who is currently active in the bands Harmaja and Northern Kings, Apocalyptica`s drummer Mikko Sirén, keyboardist Vili Ollila, guitar player Tuomas Wäinölä and bass player Lauri Porra (Stratovarius, earlier also in Sinergy). But how the quintet makes people dance, enthuses even the most sceptical Type O Negative devotees and puts a smile upon their faces is almost magic. But it`s not only this kind of magic that makes one smile: With sunglasses, an open shirt and thus a half-naked upper body, bassist Lauri partly jumps on the drum kit and turns out to be the ultimate attention whore tonight. So the smile is sometimes a grin as well. Band, sound, lighting, audience and even the DJ - named Pünis - who plays before and after the gig almost exclusively Type O Negative: Everything is just absolutely perfect! The same applies to the venue itself which doesn`t close its doors until the very last guest has gone home - without any demand to do so! That`s the way each concert evening should be like...
Conclusion: An unforgettable concert experience with a band which was apparently founded for this one event only. Well, they should think it over and repeat it - we would definitely come to the next gigs as well!
