Summary: Bilbo and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the terrifying Smaug from acquiring a kingdom of treasure and obliterating all of Middle-Earth.

What I had appreciated about the first 2 chapters was for example the fact that much mor e detail of the Tolkien Middle Earth universe (hidden in appendixes or the Silmarillion) was added to "flesh out" a story basically written for children (mainly for its casual, occasionally patronising tone; however, I personally had never placed "The Hobbit" among children literature).

Naturally I could not wait to see the final chapter, and luckily in Finland the premiere happened a bit earlier than elsewhere ...

Well, admittedly I found myself left with mixed feelings. Maybe expectations to high, or this basic melancholy about "this is it", the final visit to Middle-Earth. So be prepared to experience heartbreak, for several reasons. One, when knowing the book, there are no doubts about the outcome - still there was a certain curiosity how far Peter Jackson would create his own version (the introduction of a love story between an Elf and a Dwarf had been a bold move already).

Another reason is the fantastic cast, pulling you in emotionally - and when dealing with a war, naturally there are losses to mourn (actually, I even felt a bit sorry for Smaug).

Maybe because I had the comparison with LOTR, I somehow felt less emotional impact during most of the war scenes than e.g. at Helm´s Deep or Minas Tirith. Also, Bard (Luke Evans) did in my opinion not quite succeed in the role as charismatic/tragic leader, compared with e.g. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) or Faramir (David Wenham). And generally it felt to me that there was too much fuzz, too many different locations, people, scenes and scenarios, so that the development of major characters became a side show - the majority of the original dwarf company somehow faded into the overall tapestry of this huge war-politics-Middle-Earth-Doom thing. And other characters I had fallen in love with could have been given a bit more room (Radagast, Beorn). Great to see a real bad-ass Galadriel (Kate Blanchet) , though.
Although I had managed to keep my eyes dry, I´d recommend to pack a couple of tissues, just in case, as the final cinematic rendering of Middle Earth is definitely not ending on a light note. Even Bilbo´s return to the Shire has a very melancholic air about it, although the book had offered potential for more comedy ...

Whatever I find to fuzz about, the movie is still a MUST-SEE, an awesome experience, especially in 3D, and 2,5 h fly by like nothing. Which says it all...
