June 4, 1968 was the day hope died in the USA. Five years after the assassination of John F. Kennedy and shortly after the murder of Martin Luther King also Robert `Bobby´ Kennedy was assassinated.
Hotel Ambassador in Los Angeles is the place where everything happens. More than 20 persons live through this day in various ways, in various story lines. They represent the American melting pot,a population that hopes to see the end of racial conflicts and Vietnam war soon. This day ends with the speech of the probable next US president after winning the primary election in California, during which Bobby is shot. And with him dies America´s last hope for a new start.
This brilliantly cast film is Emilio Estevez´ first director work in 10 years and obviously the dream of a lifetime. How would it be possible otherwise to gather so many famous Hollywood stars? It seems he is not the only one being fascinated by RobertF. Kennedy. He is an american myth but not as respected as his brother in the rest of the world. Estevez manages to portray Bobby´s qualities by portraying different characters.
Several story lines stick out, e.g. the illegal kitchen worker Jose (Freddy Rodriguez) who cannot see a Dodger baseball game because his racist boss (Christian Slater) puts him into a double shift. There is the young Diane (Lindsay Lohan) who wants to marry her buddy William (Elijah Wood) only to save him from going to Vietnam. There is the young black Kennedy volunteer Dwayne (Nick Cannon), and they all show how the wohle nation must have felt that day. During the day they work, show reasons to hope for a better future, but then witnessing Bobby´s fate in the Ambassador hall they end up in an depression, as well as the whole nation.
This film touched me. The main characters mentioned and even more do an excellent acting job, you are drawn into the story that proceeds quickly and get a feeling for those times and places. Bobby is shown in this film only by documentary TV and radio clips which supports that feeling. A very good film that was not very successful in the USA, and I cannot understand why. Hopefully it will have better reception in Gérmany and the rest of the world, Emilio Estevez would deserve that.
