The fact that director Todd Phillips has got a good sense of humor, we already know since Starsky and Hutch, or since his screenplay for Borat, but with The Hangover he has made a real hit.

Two days before Doug´s wedding, Doug, Alan, Phil and Stu get to Las Vegas to celebrate his bachelor party. Once there they check in at Caesars Palace - in the most expensive suite - and drink a bottle of Jagermeister on the roof of the hotel, before they go to make party. The next morning, the room is totally devastated ... a chicken on the counter, a tiger in the loo, a baby in the closet, a mattress thrown out of the window and a brand new police car in the garage ... but Doug is gone and the other three can unfortunately not remember anything what happened in the night. Doug´s wedding is approaching and they start a search through Vegas for their friend by using the hints scattered in the room. They begin to remember step by step and a very abstruse story is revealing... (HD)

Two pair of eyes, two opinions

A very pleasant work indeed, mere inches from perfection. ´Hangover´ is a movie about a group of friends having a bachelor party in Las Vegas. Well, really the movie is more based on hung over friends trying to find their to-be groom by retracing their steps of the previous night.

Just about every comedy is based on the formula which has a group of friends, all of whom have a particular characteristic and one of them is of course a total idiot. Zach Galifianakis managed this part really well; not really being an idiot as much as living in a different world as ´normal´ people.

After the director of the semi-legend, ´Old School´ had disgraced himself with the pile of bollocks known as ´Starsky & Hutch´, he directed something that is very worth wile to watch. Apart from directing ´Hangover´, he also produced it and did a fine job there too. Actually, the only aspect of the film that deserves criticism is the script, which was not bad, but nowhere near perfect –mainly due to a lack of originality.

Luckily, fart jokes were avoided on most parts -a few did slip through here and there- but the humour itself was not really original. One could compare it to an old joke that everybody knows, but being told in an original voice (if that makes any sense). To put it simply, a lot of the jokes were really easy to see coming, but it´s told so well that it does make you laugh none the less.

In the end the film was quite good. One of the reasons why the movie was good is the character of Alan. The way he was portrayed in the film by Zach Galifianakis bears strong resemblances to his drifty on-stage persona within his stand-up comedy performances. Further reasoning for the success of the film is just that it was well made; script was ok, well directed and produced, good acting etc. Furthermore, it must be mentioned, that the music fitted in perfectly, especially Alan´s friend-song. (OA)

The rating average is:
Who likes Dude, Where’s My Car?, will love Hangover. Since Borat this is the first comedy I saw in a movie theater where I had to piss myself laughing. Highly recommended.
