The story: Lila (Anna Fischer, known from movies like “The Hidden Word,” “Krauts, Doubts & Rock ´n´ Roll,” and “We Are the Night”) meets Chriz (Kostja Ullmann, known from “Tatort,“ “The Wild Chicks and Life” and “Special Escort“) and falls head over heels in love. After one year in USA, she comes back to Berlin and does not know that meanwhile the band BERLIN MITTE –especially their lead singer Chriz- set off mass hystery within the female fans. When she finds out what sort of a person she fell in love with, it goes wild. Then Chris is turned on by her natural personality, but his manager reminds him all the time, that groupies don´t stay for breakfast. The press is also following Lila and she has to deal with the jealous fans. They both have to decide: Lila gambles with the normality of her life and Chriz with his career…
How it is done: With the carefully picked german cast, which can show off with rising stars, like Kostja Ullman and Anna Fisher, nothing should go wrong. “Notting Hill” was the role model for this film and that was a big blockbuster back in the days. Unfortunately the makers of “Groupies Bleiben Nicht zum Frühstück” really wanted to reach the target audience -which probably was supposed to be brain dead teenagers- as the dialogue is sometimes so weak and going on the nerves so much, that the movie -which was planned as a comedy in big parts- just makes you angry. How often do you have to repeat that the girl was gone for a long time with no connection to German TV whatsoever? How often did she need to ask for the band name and say it wrong? Until the last idiot finally gets it, that she does no know the band? It is the weak storyboard in this sticky sweet romantic comedy which spoils it. It´s a pity because it´s not the actors´ fault; what´s good is that the local colour as they show Berlin´s beautiful side. All in all “Groupies Bleiben Nicht zum Frühstück” is a romantic TV comedy for rainy days movie it lacks quality for the big cinema.
