SaraLee: Cherish your dreams!

HIM and Negative, beware - another Love Metal Act from the North is on the way to Europe, fascinating girls and boys with their melancholic texts and catchy tunes! Right before the release of the second SaraLee album „Damnation to Salvation“ we spoke with singer Joonas.

Hi Joonas how are you doing? How do you feel only a few days before the release of your new record?
Hi, thanks for asking I am doing just fine now. I feel looking forward the release of “DtS” and eager to get back on stage.

Soon your second record Damnation to Salvation will be released in Finland, what can we expect? Can you tell us something about the producing process? When will it be available in Europe?
Well, you can expect strong melodies, dramatic lyrics and hard rocking. Much more solid and harder than our first album was. I hope it gains success =) Producing process was really different than first album. We had a real producer this time and you can totally hear that in the record. Session was really hard, but really rewarding! (Now the album is available worldwide, check out http://www.saraleeweb.com/ the ed.)

What kind of music will it be the typical SaraLee style or something new?
Well, it’s gonna be both. I’d like to think that we are much more metal/rock orientated than before, not much gothic vibes included this time. But the point with “DtS” and “Darkness Between” is that we still have strong vocal melodies and a bit melancholic lyrics. So it is a compilation of both 50% new and 50% old.

I have seen the new video to Scars, can you tell us why you chose this song as the first and where have you done this video? Have you done the concept of the video yourself?
It was the best song from the album or easiest to do. We have recorded it before so it is a bit older song and it combines both sides of SaraLee.

Is there a tour planed yet?
We have been planning it to the spring. The Christmastime is not so good to tour.

How did it all begin? Is there a story behind the band name?
It all began before year 2000, when I, Clansman and Saurus started to play together in a early version of SaraLee. As time went on, we changed our name couple of times till our guitar player Juha came up with the idea of SaraLee, he saw it on her dreams. After that we have seen that SaraLee as a name is a something beautiful and great we all are searching to our life.

Who writes the music /lyrics, or are all in the band responsible?
Mostly I do all the lyrics and music, but lately our guitarists Juha & Arzka have started to do songs also. In this new album, Damnation to Salvation, Juha has already did two first to tracks.

What are the main themes in your songs, are they personal or only fiction?
There are many themes, before it was like how I’m feeling so bad or someone is feeling so bad. But now I am concentrating them and other themes a bit different. One new theme is religions, or more like what do they do to people. And then there is theme about fearing something that you don’t know. And one of the totally new themes is also rage and anger towards some certain things.

Do you have next to SaraLee other projects or bands?
I did have one, but I have to leave it. But now I don’t have any projects except this acoustic cover band. Other guys have their own projects.

What do you do if you are not in the band (studying, working)?
I don’t know what would I do. I haven’t thought of life without music. Maybe I would be working.

What is your dream, where does your motivation come from?
My dream is to do SaraLee all my life with these guys. Support my life with the band. My motivation comes from that and the thing that this is so much fun to leave behind =)

What was the most exciting/the most disappointing moment in your band history?
Most exciting moment I think, was when we were first time playing here at our hometown biggest rock joint Lutakko or the recording sessions of the second album. Disappointing moments.. hmmm, maybe the moments when people have left the band, whatever reason may have been.

Which song are you most proud of, and why?
I think my dearest one now is Crimson Sky, because of the lyrics and the mellow mood of it. Hard to select just one. All the songs from the new album are really GRRRREAT!

What do you think is cool/totally sucks about being a musician?
Cool is to play at gigs and see the reactions of different people. Recording is really neat also and I can’t say that if someone likes us and starts to “fan” us, it doesn’t feel bad at all =)

What do you plan in the near future?
Hopefully lots of gigs and tours all over the world!

Do you have some final words for the Stalker readers?
What ever your dreams are, just remember to cherish them!! KTDA

Thank you for the interview. And all the best with the new record!
