Blind
STALKERs Fresh Act – January 2009

STALKER decided to choose Blind as a Fresh Act, which marches to a different drummer, as they are in the lucky position to call a record contract their own. In January -08 the guys from Andernach (that is close to Koblenz) released their self-titled debut album in Germany and since then they´ve been touring Germany. Their music is best described as Alternative Rock and sounds a little like 4Lynn, somewhat like Good Charlotte, a bit like Audrey Horne and also a tiny piece of Linkin Park is visible. We had a talk with singer Steve Joachim and guitarist Fabian Zimmermann during their concert in Hamburg.

Blind has existed already for more than six years. How is it that it took you that long to release your debut?
Steve: We had already released a EP in self distribution, but it took really very long to find the people who wanted to work with us the way we were expecting.

You finally ended up at Jochens Kleiner Plattenfirma (JKP), where amongst others, Die Toten Hosen are signed. How did you manage this?
Steve: Kuddel of the Toten Hosen lives pretty much in our neighbourhood. He was at a concert where we played as support act of Silbermond and saw something great in us. We got to talk to each other and were friends ever since. It was down this path that the whole thing developed.

Are you a fan of Die Toten Hosen?
Steve: Honestly? I thought the Hosen were terrible, but back then I wasn´t really looking into them. Since I saw them the first time live, I turned into an ultra fan. We were at Rock am Ring on stage when they played and it was mind-blowing. After this, you have to become a fan.

What are your goals for Blind?
Fabian: To play there as well! Main stage, headliner at Rock am Ring. Yes!
Steve: A goal worth all the effort. Whereas this most probably remains as a dream, that´s the goal right there. To make our living out of our music with Blind is already a really big step we´ve done, and the enhancements of Blind towards the future is more important…
Fabian: …or is as important!
Steve: ...as the goal.
Fabian: The path which takes us there is the one a musician wants to trod. If we get there in 10 years then we´ll simply play with Die Toten Hosen and Metallica. (laughs)

Does your long way up there already have some festival gigs for 2009 planned?
Steve: Sure! We now live from our music and some big festivals are already confirmed.

Please introduce yourself a little more personally. What are the biggest features of the band?
Steve: Fabian is a very painstaking person – in his private life as well as in the band. That is his most important attribute to name. He is never doing anything half ways and always gives 100%. He is the one who organises everything inside the band.
Fabian: Steve is a heave ho-guy. He is fast and easy enthusiastic about all kinds of things. That is a very positive attribute for the band and also for him as person. Steve: Gunnar is the machine – also in his life. If he wants to do something, he´ll get it on the way. Guido is our anchor windward. He always lends us an ear and that is one of his most important attributes.

Is there something aside the music in your lives?
Steve: Yes, certainly. I´m into sports, as I need the strength for the stage. I simply go running and I don´t need a studio for this. In the past I used to skate a lot, but I can´t do this anymore (not that young anymore!), as it is too danger for my bones. Bones can also break, even if you are in the bloom of your age.
Fabian: Right now there isn´t really time to do something aside the band, but I´m not sportive anyhow. I prefer to spend free time on my sofa, watch TV and relax.

What are your songs about?
Steve: This varies a lot. I write about stories which are touching me. ”Wake Me Up” is for example about a prostitute who is over forty and on her ropes. I asked myself what such a person could possibly have as perspective.

Did you talked to one about it?
Steve: No, I somehow put myself in her shoes… (laughs)

A video of one of your songs is available on your website. What is the story here?
Steve: „Break Away“ is one of the very few songs we wrote in the studio. Everybody agreed very fast that this is the song which will be the first single release. We wanted to do a video along this and after brainstorming with our label and booking agent we had some idea of it. After this the treatments of different companies who were up to do it arrived. We chose the version which suited the song best and gave a good picture of the story. It´s all about breaking out life in the form of breaking out of the necessities we´re all forced to face in this world. The two people which are playing in this video are breaking out of their necessities and find a weird area, where they feel comfortable. Then they are forced out of this place… just like in real world.

Are you already working on your next album? What do you think on how long it might take this time?
Steve: For sure no six years again. We´re planning to go back in studio quite soon to push the whole thing forward. We try to manage it next spring; weather it´s going to work out is still open. There will be a mix of old songs which were not fitting on the first album and some new songs we´re working on.

You have just been through the whole circus. Do you have any hints for other newcomers?
Steve:I want to warn them not to let people tell them how they should sound like. That is the worst you could possibly do. You should do your music the way you like it and in no other way. If you listen to people, who are telling you to do your sound thingamabob; then you´ll sound thingamabob – that is just not working. We always defended our band from this and I think that is one of the reasons why we are standing here today.
