The "Party.San" is definitely among the coziest but also toughest festivals of the season! The location is pretty weird, the fans are like a big family, the organization is small but effective, and the worst that can happen are a few that passed out - besides perhaps some delays in the time table that everybody can understand. One thing was disturbing, however, the number of visitors was even less than in the previous year. Many bands played just for a few dozen - that could have been better, but probably the program is too "underground" for the masses. In this case the definition "small but nice" has an unpleasant tinge...

The right opening for this festival was performed by Postmortem , one of the most hopefuls in the German underground scene. The guys used this chance and attracted quite a crowd with their US-Swedish Death Metal mix, which received much more than a friendly applause. A good gig of Postmortem and a promising Party.San 2009 start.

The following Azarath from the US I partly missed as I checked out the merchandise area. But Psycroptic who played next had already impressed me on CD and also convinced me live. The Swedes offered quite brutal Death Metal and convinced also the uninformed. This catchy as well fierce music attracted the headbangers, therefore Psycroptic left a very good impression.

Deströyer 666 seemed rather tame and anemic in comparison, although the Australians struggled to impress. But their Death/ Black somehow did not quite inspire the crowd that was visibly smaller than before with Psycroptic.

Quite different the headliner situation. The Swede s Marduk seemed pretty tipsy already when entering the stage (especially singer Lars was as drink as a skunk) and fired off the big guns right away. The catchy typical MARDUK-Sound works perfectly for such a festival, the audience was inspired by the energy of those drunk Swedes and joined the party. MARDUK played their set despite their condition very tight and without big blunders, therefor the show was simply marvellous!

began in a quite entertaining manner with Summers Dying, who managed to confirm their reputation as good live act - great for every festival!

The following bands Graback, Inhume, Solstafir, Den Saakaldte & Evocation I hardly knew, therefore their music did not leave much impression on me. Who liked their styles had surely enjoyed their shows.

The other bands (Swallow The Sun, Hate Eternal, Thyrfing, Misery Index & Unleashed) however had the opposite effect - hadbanging ad infinitum! Their technical Death Metal simply overwhelmed everybody, and all the bands pleased the crowd also with new song material - sometimes there was quite surprising stuff to be heard. All those great bands absolutely lived up to their reputation as fantastic live acts and delivered flawless shows - no more to say!

Then finally one of the festival highlights, despite the horribly short playing time: Satyricon! Well known and favored for their intense live shows, those guys pulled off an ingenious live show and focused on the more recent song material, also presenting the new CD "The Age Of Nero", which was quite appreciated by the crowd. A lot of show, good music and high quality lyrics - this band I´d always watch over and over again!

The black crew par excellance - Hellsaw convinced also at the Party.San, despite the fact that they had sound problems. Yet with songs like "I Saw Hell" or "Ache" nothing can go wrong!! Hellsaw promised a great Metal-Party, and the Austrians pulled it off! Thumbs up for Hellsaw!

The following bands Beneath The Massacre, Paganizer & Rotten Sound have never really been my faves, this is why I rather enjoyed the good weather and chatted with friends. Those acts, however, received quite good response with their tough Metal.

I had already been looking forward to seeing Shining because albums „The Eerie Cold“ and „Livets Ändhallplats “ had been part of my collection for ages. And then this disappointment! Shining ounfortunately offered not quite enough of what I had expected. Sorry guys, that didn´t quite work out.

The program continued with Brutal Truth, Sadus, Moonsorrow & Brujera who delivered a Genre-typical Metal, pretty good but not really exciting - still they worked fine as warm up acts. After that it was Eluveitie´s turn. The guys and girls played their Folk Metal just the way you should play it - fast and intense. Sometimes they played so slowly that you could order a beer between the snare hits ;-). Great gig that made you curious about further releases of this Swiss act.

Dark Funeral and Six Feet Under should be the final bands for this year´s Party.San-Festival, quite stylish with dark melancholy. Both bands impressed the big crowd with show effects and new material, but naturally also their classics. All in all Dark Funeral and Six Feet Under offered relaxed but partly a bit too improvised shows, for my taste, but the audience absolutely appreciated that.

Summary: Good bands, good or even great weather, good food, great atmosphere and - at least on the festival area - smooth organisation characterised this year´s Party.San-Festival.
