IESAF was admittedly not known to me before this10th anniversary night – what a shame, as it is one of the oldest organisations in Finland of its kind. The International English Speakers´ Association of Finland is a volunteer organisation which basically assists people who get stranded here to find their way – so to say. For chairman Richard Berman, who had moved to Finland 16 years ago, the founding of such an organisation was a natural choice: “that is the kind of person I am.” The idea for this anniversary party came from the CEO of Macaroni Penguin Music, Daniel Beech (also the singer of The Compass Schedule), and for this celebration of voluntary work the bands had also agreed to play for free. However, Indi Loveless had to cancel at short notice, thus Flute of Shame got the chance to take over the headliner spot.

Naturally, the atmosphere in the crowded Dubrovnik club had more of a party than a regular concert, much of the program contained Rock / Blues classics covers, starting with singer/songwriter David Norman . Caroline Street mastermind Tom Morgan performed originals of his band as solo performer. The Stratomaster Blues Combo entertained the crowd with classics from Elvis to Jimi Hendrix, before the skilful drumming of Keith Hall blew everybody´s minds.
The act everybody felt curious about was Flute of Shame (start photo), as there is a quite well-known Finnish singer in the line-up, Koop Arponen. Cover songs also here, even played on request (e.g. Whisky in the Jar, House of the Rising Sun), so their show kicked everybody´s ass. This 4 year old act can provide original songs, too (released on their two Eps), and they are no doubt brilliant performers, so I can only recommend to check them out, either live or at fluteofshame.com.

A technical problem in the middle of their set - and the fact that the party crowd simply didn´t want to let the band go - delayed the show of The Compass Schedule, who provided mostly original songs. Their wild mix of styles – from Funk to Indie Rock – fitted quite nicely into this anniversary celebration but had to be kept shorter than planned. Still a nice finale to an entertaining evening, congrats IESAF and all the best for the next 10 years!
