The new CD by Lacrimosa - who are touring now, check our tourdates - starts with a minimalist guitar- and piano duet and leads over to the dramatic pathos Lacrimosa was all along surrounded – 8 minutes long ignoring the recommendation of the music industry, the listener is invited to dive into the atmosphere of the album. Lacrimosa, that´s the stage, on which the soul of Tilo Wolffs theatrically represents its condition between melancholic melodiousness and passionate burst. Lacrimosa likes to combine various elements from different genres like rock, metal, classical music and cabaret, and they celebrate this mixture in “Sehnsucht” (yearning) again, but much more aggressive and based on electric guitars than ever before. Even with the throat Tilo Wolff responds this hardness and pushes the presentation of his lyrics up to shrill high and dissonant tunes. The yearning obviously provokes him to an expressive interpretation, already in the sense of an emotions-projection on the screen of a musical theatre.
After a pretty hard rocking „Mandira Nabula“ the record changes to a elegiac ballad – A.u.S. – with a hoarse, murmuring voice. With “Feuer” it breaks out hatefully inclusive orchestra and children´s chorus, the voice suggesting some parallels to the Das Ich-singer Stefan Ackermann that adds to the rather catchy song an individual and edged character. With “A prayer for your heart” Anne Nurmi (from Finland) presents an irritating contrast building on a gentle, melodious song-composition, not that much on angry eruptions. In this song she shows a wide range of varieties from a deep timbre up to high, fragile tunes. But with “I lost my star in Krasnodar” Lacrimosa is back in rocking metal. The album’s suspense lives from the up and down of silent and furious moments: following the hard guitar riffs the lyrical “Die Taube” leads the listener into a sad valley of beauty, in which the piano, an organ and a trumpet paint the scape. Nevertheless the song “Call me with the voice of love” is so soft swilled, so plain ironed, spick and span without any murk and shadow that it doesn’t fit to the tragic depth of the rest.
A collection of many ideas follows the well-known spectra of Lacrimosa-sound and invoke the old image, but they are clothed in a different dress. Beside the decision to work clearly more with a hard, drifting rock and less with concertante melancholy, Tilo Wolff tried to develop different kinds of expressions through his voice. This becomes sometimes even shrill, maltreating the ears with emotional overshoot. It needs some time to get used to this dramatic art and even then, I think, a little less would have been more. But where the painter squirts expressively with colour, not every blur lands on the place it would be the best. Therefore the routine, round production gets a spontaneous, unperfected and very personal face.
