CMXCIX or 999, well, is it the year in which Otto III. gave the area of Gera, Germany to his sister Adelheid or the emergency number in the UK or, maybe a bit too obvious, the reversed number of the BEAST? Be it as it may, CMXCIX is definitely the debut album of Survivors Zero who have come together as a band solely for the reason to properly shake up the Finnish music scene. For this purpose mastermind Sami Jämsen recruited several, accomplished hell-raisers of metal like Tommi Virranta (vocals), Tapio Wilska (bass, vocals) and Jani Luttinen (guitar) and whereto the consumption of alcoholic beverages (see thankyou notes in the booklet where, besides family and friends, Jack Daniels, beer and the notorious Finnish Jaloviina is first and foremost appreciated) can lead is best described as fat death metal with a considerable proportion of thrash and at least 60 vol.-% aggro vibe. There´s no pointless messing around, pathetic melancholy or opera whining, the guys simply focus on the basics – straight-to-the-face metal. Whether Survivors Zero will be the saviours of Finnish Metal remains to be seen, CMXCIX is, however, a very good start.
