The band name alone doesn’t give you any clue about what kind of music we’re about to hear. But already after the first few notes it becomes clear that it’s not a Catholic girl singing group. The guys from the Ruhr area in Germany want to delight the interested listener with hard/metalcore - I thought, though this genre had fortunately already gone extinct but I was wrong.
Be it as it may, the general problem with hardcore songs is that you usually don’t remember much of them later and this is not different with Western Standard, either. However, here and there I experience some short moments of happiness, exactly when the guys go down a more raw and snotty anarcho road. Bands like Black Flag come to mind and the starting riff of Break Ya Face somehow even reminds me of the legendary Dead Kennedys. But as already said those moments are very short-lived and are immediately replaced by all too –core-y elements like background shouts, samples and even worse rap(?)interludes (and those even in German!!). It doesn’t make the songs very exciting. But still Hate/inc and Never Had It do have something about them – I think here the guys are on the right track to get that snot factor I mentioned earlier.
Bottom line: when the band could free itself a bit more from its hardcore shackles then they are getting way closer to their goal of being an interesting band.
