After 13 years of hard work in the metal scene, the Germans of Suidakra just put out their 10th album called “Book of Dowth”, recorded once again at the Gernhart Studio by Martin Buchwalter.
Known for their unique combination of melodic death metal, classic heavy metal and Celtic folk elements, the trio formed by Arkadius, Lars and Marcus succeeded on making this album an even better one than their last "Crógacht". The lyrical concept of the album was inspired by ancient dark Celtic tales and tells the untold story of a mysterious race of demonic beings, the Formors. The beautiful yet somber coverart was painted by the Belgian artist Kris Verwimp.
When it comes to the songs, be ready for breathtaking epic melodies adorned by bagpipes, acoustic guitars, keyboards and choirs, mashed up with killer riffs, powerful rhythmic drums and the harsh voice and amazing growlings of Arkadius Antonik, sharp as a knife. Diversity is the main characteristic of this album - you will never get bored, that´s for sure.
After the instrumental opener “Over Nine Waves”, with its magical bagpipe melodies and heavy riffs, comes the rapid and crunchy "Dowth 2059", one of the catchiest songs in my opinion. The third track “Battle-Cairns” has great harmonies, melodic riffs and brilliant solos. All that without losing its heavyness and death metal roots. “Biróg´s Oath” surprises with the strong, crooning female vocals of Tina Stabel, and with its fairy-like atmosphere filled with bagpipes, melodic clean riffs and a touch of violin, it takes us straight to ancient Ireland and its dark folk tales. “Mag Mell” follows as a beautiful acoustic ballad with Arkadius singing clean vocals, female backing vocals and whispers, announcing a storytelling full of mystical and melancholic tunes. It breaks the heavyness of the earlier songs, highlighting the album´s diversity and the dynamic of the its theme. “The Dark Mound”, “Balor” and “Fury Fomoraigh” bring the extreme metal, the growling and the killer riffs back in its essence. Drums full of power and the characteristic folk elements just crown the whole package. The martial "Stones Of Seven Suns" is great to sing (and headbang) along and very catchy. The instrumental-outro "Otherworlds Collide" its absolutely the perfect closing of this Celtic metal masterpiece.
If you´re a folk/celtic death metal fan, “Book of Dowth” is a must have in your collection. If you aren´t, you´ll surely become one after listening to it.
