Medan Agan was originally formed by mastermind Diman Koutsogiannopoulos in Paris in 2005. Back then, the band played progressive metal and shared stages with bands like Pain of Salvation, After All and Within Temptation. One year later, Diman went back to Greece where he started his band from scratch again. Instead of a male singer, he opted for coloratura soprano singer Iliana Tsakiraki as a ´fronter´. Besides her, also a new keyboarder joined the band.
From that point on, their music was more like symphonic/progressive metal with high opera-style v vocal parts. The band spent the last few months in the studio and from these sessions, they now release their completely self-made debut record Erevos Aenaon. And this debut is impressive, there are almost one dozen songs, which are well composed and remind you of early Nightwish. Iliana accentuates the music with her skilled voice and, through it, gives the songs her very own character, and all this without sounding like all the other sirens, who sprang up like mushrooms after Tarja Turunen´s success. However, the album couldn´t quite get on without some male growls but they appear only at the end of the album and provide some nice contrast. Iliana is really blessed with a pleasant voice and the songs accommodate her ability perfectly.
Although there are, here and there, still a few ´funky´ notes, we can be happy to have found a worthy heir to Nightwish´s throne, who can also compete with bands like Within Temptation and Epica. My compliments for such an awesome debut.
