A little bit more than one year ago, The Man-Eating Tree released their first record titled Vine. The new band of ex-Sentenced drummer Vesa Ranta and ex-Poisonblack guitarist Janne Markus could achieve quite a few successes. Their first single hit the top 3 of the Finnish Charts, which was followed by a European tour with Tarot, on which they gained many new fans. Now, Harvest, the band´s sophomore album, gets to see the light of day. And after the successful debut record, the expectations are more than high.
One or the other maybe already knows the song Armed, for which the band recently released a video (you can see it here: http://youtu.be/3r_ayb-w1r4). Armed turned out to be a true earworm but also all the other songs on the record are great – so Harvest easily tops Vine. The ´man-eating´ Lady and Gentlemen are generously delivering catchy guitar riffs and melodies. Also singer Tuomas Tuominen seems to have improved tremendously compared with the last record (even though there was absolutely no necessity) but, on this record, he sounds way more on-the-spot. And bassist Mikko Uusimaa and keyboarder Heidi Määttä round off the whole album with their contributions. Soon it won´t be possible to imagine the metal scene with The Man-Eating Tree because there aren´t many bands who are able to write songs with so much deepness and melancholy. Apart from Sentenced maybe but, as we all know, they are not with us anymore.
I have to deduct 0,5 points because of the 10 songs on the record two are ´only´ instrumentals and for my taste, this is at least one to many. But otherwise Harvest is a brilliant record. The Man-Eating Tree will accompany Amorphis on their European tour in winter.
