The connection between Jarkko Ahola and Christmas songs should be obvious since Raskasta Joulua (a compilation of Christmas songs, reinterpreted by Finnish rock stars) at the latest, but this time the strong-voiced Finn makes a Christmas record on his own. “Ave Maria-Joulun Klassikot” has nothing to do with the Rock/Metal versions of Christmas songs like Raskasta Joulua. They are performed in a classical style without heavy guitars and drums. Here once again Ahola can prove what an unbelievably talented singer he is and the variety of his voice. But still it seems that he sometimes needs to hold back himself at all those high notes, which he is able to reach. The record offers a nice choice of popular Finnish Christmas songs plus “Nessun Dorma” and Adagio”, which also fit perfectly to the quiet Christmas time. ”Nessun Dorma” should be known by everybody and not just Opera fans, Jarkko manages to sing this song unbelievably well. Only the Italian language is something to mention because he pronounces the words a bit too hard, at least at the beginning of the song. The songs are really nicely arranged and as always Jarkko Ahola performs masterfully vocal-wise, he has done something also a Metal heart will like. I hope that he will nevertheless stay in the metal scene in the future because I think that the “King of the high notes” is better off here where he can also show his skills.
