It always gets me nervous when a band, which produced incredible, records makes a new one, but thank Chuck Norris, everything went well. If it works, I tend to play it over and over again to see how durable it is and to test my girlfriend´s nerves. This time it lasted three rounds for three days.
There is a definite difference to their previous albums: “Youngblood” is a lot happier. The reason for this is the general change in sound which leans towards classic rock. Amongst many other aspects, the drum comps are more punk-based and the keyboards are a lot less gloomy. Maybe the band members all have girlfriends now, who knows?
As usual, the album gives all musicians a lot of opportunity to show what their made of in terms of talent. Arve Isdal´s guitars never cease to stun. Even the bass player is given a chance to shine in a little solo.
So the question is: why isn´t this album perfect? First of all, some of the more prominent riffs and lyrics aren´t original. Fair enough, these days, it´s almost impossible to come up with something original, as so much has already been done. A very good example is “There Goes a Lady”. Now picture a classic rock song with heavy blues riffs and all band members shout the title in the chorus. As previously stated, not original, but hey, it works! Another thing is that there where Le Fol was worth full points and just about every song was a hit, “Youngblood” simply pales in comparison. Furthermore, approximately 45 minutes is a bit short for a full album.
No matter if the riffs and beats were stolen, copied, or borrowed, the greatness of the album cannot be denied. The album is able to transport the listener to another dimension, if they only wish to. I am hungrily waiting to see how the songs work live.
