In 2009, the German quartet Heavy Ride won a school jam competition - since then, a lot has changed. With the exception of lead guitarist Josef Blöchl, all old band members were switched for new ones: Florian Seemann now fills the position of singer and rhythm guitarist, Johannes Puschmann took over the drums and David Stich is playing bass guitar nowadays.
But not only the line-up has changed also the music has improved a lot as the debut album „Heavy Ride“ shows. With rocking and really awesome sounding guitars, vocals that have more facets than a diamond (yet sound at times a bit flat) and an overall picture that couldn´t be more harmonic, the band sounds as good as never before.
Florian´s vocals reflect the mood of the lyrics pretty nicely. In combination with the never boring guitar playing, songs such as „No Silver Bullet“ with its rocking and stirring sound and its rough edges or also „Old Salt“ with its really strong vocals and a refrain that invites one to sing along, make the album a success. The embedded instrumental passages, which put the guitar sound a bit more into the foreground, give the songs a tad bit of this certain something, gradually building an arc of suspense.
As a conclusion I can say that Heavy Ride really managed to create their own style and sound. With their debut album, they share a strong release with the music scene – it features really good quality, well-written songs and many different facets. I am sure we´ll hear a lot from this band in the future!
