Engel is In Flames´ guitarist, Niklas Engelin´s, second band. Raven Kings is its fourth release. Genre-wise, it´s somewhere between Melodic Death Metal and the modern In Flames sound. Those who expect clear Gothenborg-style Metal will, however, be disappointed. Also, even if you don´t have any expectations, you will actually be disappointed because the songs are only average. They are all arranged in a quite simple way (almost no song reaches the 4 minute barrier), the choruses do not work very well (with the little exception of „Salvation“ and „Fading Light“) and the riffs are just basic. In addition, the obese production has eaten up all the music´s roughness and aggression. In summary: „Raven Kings“ is not a bad album but it is low on high(light)s. In my opinion, this is something it has in common with the last In Flames albums…
