Everything you wanted to know about Finnish Metal - but never dared to ask...

First of all, although living in Finland for a long time and having a particular focus on the Metal scene, still this documentary contained a lot of new information and interesting surprises for me. Even better, if anybody of my friends asks "so why did you move there? How is life and the Metal scene in Finland?" I don´t need to talk about it any longer - I just put this into the DVD player.

Second - this DVD contains 90 min of the documentary that was already shown on Finnish national TV, PLUS exactly 02:46:48 min of Extra material, basically the extended versions of those interviews that are used in the documentary (see list below). The booklet gives a mixture of information and entertainment - there are articles about Finnish Metal, but also a section "How survive a trip to Finland" (plus Finnish language crash course).

Because a) it´s really well done with a wide range of angles and aspects to the Metal scene as such b) by an expert as director/producer who was part of the Finnish 80´s Metal scene himself, Kimmo Kuusniemi from Sarcofagus, c) English is the main language - those few Interviews in Finnish language are subtitled, and finally d) everything is still very entertaining to watch - the main material was filmed in Finland, at Tuska festival and at the Finnish Metal Expo in 2008. Therefore some of the bars or venues presented here unfortunately no longer exist... (but: others have opened instead, so still plenty of places to go for Metalheads visiting HELLcity!)

An example what I mean with a) - it´s not only Finnish Metal veterans who tell their story, like Ville Valo (HIM), Mr. Lordi or Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot), a tattoo artist or international stars like Dimmu Borgir, Killswitch Engage or Carcass talking about their Finnish experiences... Kimmo interviews e.g. the "Metal Priest" in Helsinki (YES it is a REAL man of God who organises Heavy Metal church services), a psychologist- and he even interviewed Finnish president Tarja Halonen HERSELF. Yes, THE FINNISH PRESIDENT. And yes, they talk about the topic "Finnish Heavy Metal music".
Do I need to explain any further why Finland is somehow DIFFERENT?

The international edition of this DVD is available for 20 E (including postage) via the shop at the website www.promisedlandofmetal.com, and just considering 90 min PLUS almost 3 h of bonus material it´s value for money, a real MUST HAVE.

You can watch the film trailer at this address: www.originofmetal.com
PS: The Finnish DVD Version will be out in shops in Finland through VL-Musiikki in September 2009.

Some quotes from the official press text:
Finland is the only country in the world where heavy metal is mainstream. Why?
We are making a documentary about the history and philosophy of Heavy Metal... and what happened to make it such a big thing in a small country called Finland? We tell the story of Finnish Heavy Metal, from it´s early “underground” days to the present.

The narration is done by Kimmo Kuusniemi from the band Sarcofagus, also a film maker, a true pioneer of Finnish heavy metal. Kimmo lives in Eastbourne, England, with Tanja Katinka Karttunen. Together they make both music and documentaries.

The bonus material contains interviews with the Finnish musicians Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot), Mr Lordi, Victor & Sister Wrath (Enochian Crescent), Roope Latvala (Children Of Bodom, Stone), Ville Valo (HIM), Tuomas Saukkonen (Before The Dawn, Black Sun Aeon, The Final Harvest), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Kalle & Jonne(Korpiklaani), Ari Koivunen (Amoral), Lauri Porra (Stratovarius & Grazy World), Sami Yli-Sirniö (Kreator, Waltari), Tuomo Saikkonen & Kuisma Aalto (Mokoma) Pexi & Hyrde(Stam1na), Kristian Ranta, Tom Gardiner & Tomi Korkalainen (Norther, Hateform & Amfisound)
International musicians: Jeff Walker(Carcass), Sven Atle Kopperud(Dimmu Borgir), Alex Hellid (Entombed), Joel Stroetzel, Howard Jones & Mike D’Antonio (Killswitch Engage)
Featured experts are e.g. Tony Taleva (Promoter, e.g. TUSKA), Jone Nikula (journalist, author, RADIO ROCK DJ), Titus Hjelm, Doctor of Theology & band member of Thunderstone
