Already before the official start at 20:00h, the first band Machinae Supremacy was on stage. When our crew member Ozzy returned from his interview with Jaska Raatikainen of Children of Bodom and I finally reached the photo pit, the last notes were played. What a bummer.

After a fortunately short scene change, Ensiferum boarded the stage. It feels like an eternity since the Finns delighted Hamburg with their presence and their fan-base was as hungry as a spring bear. As soon as the first song started, a nice moshpit grew behind my back and it increased with every song. A bigger and more beefy Petri Lindroos, who obviously did some training time, heated up the crowd together with his band mates in this beautiful location of the Grosse Freiheit. With the usual mystic-Nordic stage scenery, a light war-paint and a nice mixture of new songs and classics, there was something for each taste. The Finns delivered a good performance which was blessed with good sound and perfect light. The only minus here was too little interaction with the audience. Okay, it could have been also a bit longer, but this is not in the power of Ensiferum as the main act was already waiting.

And they had to wait quiet a bit, as the scene change lasted really long, but it was worth it. The beautiful surreal stage-decoration was a real eye-catcher. With hits like “Follow The Reaper” and “Bodom Beach Terror” the set-list contained mostly old material, which made the moshpit, which was way bigger than the already decent one from Ensiferum, going crazy. The mainly female crowd surfers were visibly more to Alexi Laiho’s taste than the other signs of affection in form of empty beer plastic cups - which were thrown at him. Janne Warman got no plastic cups but a mighty huge bra, which he used as decoration for his keyboard stand. The fact that there was almost no spitting, cursing and a lack of wildness in „Wildchild“’s performance was quite in-your-face. What you could recognize on the new album “Relentless Reckless Forever“, is continuing live: he became an adult. In sight of the concentration on the main thing here – the music – it wouldn’t have been a bad thing, but unfortunately the sound engineer of Ensiferum was much better than Children of Bodom’s. In short: the sound wasn’t ideal and spoiled the fun of listening a bit. With „Was it Worth it?” and “Hate Crew Deathroll” as encore, the quintet left the stage.
All in all it was a really nice show. Hopefully the northern hordes will beleaguer us soon again.
