This time round the stars were not properly aligned for us. We set off to Hamburg´s Markthalle two hours before the show as we were going to do an interview with Sepultura; as it turned out, the logistics didn´t work out that well and we ended up waiting for the interview until Heathen played, effectively missing the first performers – Mortal Sin. Then we were told that it would happen during Destruction´s show, but it didn´t. Long story short, we missed a few bands, but we did manage to get the interview done –albeit per e-mail- and you can read it soon here. None the less, Thrash Fest worked out really well and despite all of the problems, the evening with Sepultura & co was a great success and the Markthalle finally really crowded again.

HEATHEN
Heathen delivered a good show, even if it started off a bit slowly. The only real minus point one could give –as far as question of taste is excluded- lies within the question of what the singer should do when he´s not singing. This time Mr. White somehow reminded me of a wind-up drummer monkey as all he did was play air drums. Maybe it´s just me, but it somehow killed the atmosphere; could be that it doesn´t disturb power metal fans whatsoever.

DESTRUCTION
Slayer) mit überwiegend Songs ihrer ersten Scheiben "Sentence of Death"
(sg)

Destruction played in Markthalle for the first time 25 years ago with Slayer and today they celebrated it with songs like “Sentence of Death” and “Infernal Overkill” from their first album. The evergreen “Black Mass” was also definitely a highlight. It was impressive how the two veterans of the band, Schmier and Mike filled up the stage and boiled up the audience´s blood –if someone can do it, it´s Schmier. Another point came to the sound mixer; expertly mixed Thrash Metal and a professional band, can you ask for more? Unfortunately there was only one encore due to the lack of time, but Exodus compensated for it in their oncoming act.

EXODUS
You like this old shit? Last Act of Defiance (1989, seinem 1. Abschiedsjahr).

Exodus too held onto the 80´s and they repeatedly asked “You like this old shit?” The answers were shouts and screams of sheer joy, of course. The sound was also very well balanced. The stage show was more than energetic; the guitarists rose one after another to the drum stage to play their solos on their Flying Vs –a pure 80´s feeling. The only way the band members gave notice to their age was when the vocalist Rob drank water during his pauses. Tom Hunting, the sole original member of the band really hit the pedal to the metal in “Last Act of Defiance”. I personally knew Exodus only vaguely before the show, but on the next day, I invested double digits in Amazon.

SEPULTURA
Schöne Show!

Sepultura kicked off with „Beneath the Remains“ from the same-named album, effectively wrapping the audience around their finger. During the following classic “Refuse Resist”, I had to think about Mr. Cavalera shortly, but only shortly as Derrick had completely overwhelmed me at the last Wacken. And so did he tonight too. The set list was perfectly round and hits like “Amen”, “We Who Are”, “Infected Voice” and “Innerself” pleased all of the participants. With crystal clear sound and tangible intensity, Derrick Green & co threw more flames into the fire, which was made flesh in the form of a moshpit, which Destruction had previously kicked into motion. Sepultura bade the hamburgers farewell with a fulminated version of “Arise”. Great show!
