The Sorrow: Core and chaos!

The new Metal hopefuls The Sorrow from Austria has caught STALKER´s attention a couple of times, e.g. at the previous Tuska festival. Their new album "Origin Of The Strom", to be released end of february, impressed the STALKER crew indeed, so we took the first chance to grab Basser Tobi for a short & painless interview...

How did you approach your new songs? How were they written?

The tracks were composed in only three months. Due to tours, festivals and our normal day jobs, we had not much time to write all the tracks. So it was a busy time for us, especially for our guitar players Andi and Mätze, who wrote the songs in front og their computer with a guitar and a drum computer. After that was done, we did some rehearsels and wrote the lyrics… all in all a very busy period of time!

How is a new The Sorrow song created?

We always start with y new riff, which is mostly written by Andi or Mätze. Sometimes a two ideas are melted into one song or an idea is even kicked into the waste. It is not very easy to satisfy us! Therefore we often have the impression that we are not working creativly enough. But these periods are fortunately not very long.

Where do you see the main differences between ``Blessings from a Blackened Sky`` and ``Origin of the Storm``?

``Origin of the Storm`` has become more mature than our debut. The Core elements are reduced and there are more Death Metal parts. We simply did not want to include a mosh part into each song as we did on our first album.

What are your major influences?

There are too many bands to mention. Butt he most important influences are the classic Metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and all the Swedish Death Metal-bands like At the Gates, Soilwork or Amon Amarth. But also bands of the NWOAHM, like Killswitch Engage and Unearth, belong to our favourites. Our favourites number one are definitely Panetra and Machine Head.

What are your dreams concerning The Sorrow?

We just want to play on stage and to visit foreign countries as long as possible. We also would like to play in Russia and Asia. If all those dreams would come true, it would be really insane!

What can we expect from The Sorrow in the near future?

First of all, we will do a tour with Sepultura. Our new album will be released on 27th February. In the summer we will play as many festivals as possible. In fall we will be back on tour, hopefully.
