They are not anymore the most young or the most beautiful or - after a break of almost thirty years in the bands existence - the most known, but damned: in the small club Hafenklang the band UK Decay ("reloaded" from the beginning of the 80th) performed full intensity!
A small sheet of paper outside glued on a pillar showed the way "UK Decay - small entrance". The organizers didn't expected a crowd of visitors, and right, exactly 30 guests found the way to this pearl of wave direct located at the Hamburg fish market. On schedule at 9:30 p.m. the support band Reptyle from Bielefeld started with their show of gothic rock, obviously not able to overcome the distance to the audience, neither with music, nor with direct invitation. They faced the notorious Hanseatic reserve. The frontman Zulu with a new aerodynamic hairstyle got shouts like "where did you leave your long hair!" The applause was rather discrete. Zulu thoughtfully mentioned: "Well, I expected, Hamburg would be somehow bigger." Nevertheless, they played good rocking music, the singer demonstrated a great voice, but the band left to him all the work to hook the audience. Under www.myspace.com/reptylemusic you can check some examples of their sound.
At 10:30 p.m. the Brits UK Decay from Luton entered the stage. From the start on they were able to offer a massive presence and power. Each single musician presented his own obvious personality with very clear musical profiles which harmonized perfectly together. Eddie Branch, who has toured in the 90th with Peter Murphy, developed both acoustically and visually a full-bodied rumour with his bass. Guitar player Steve Spon erupted a cosmos of electrifying, absolutely genial vibrations out of his strings. Raymond Phillpott on drums built an excellent rhythm skeleton to the organism of sound and lyrics.
And in ebullient mood Steve Abbott performed jumping and coiling all his energy, the vocals pervasive and not very varying, but with so much joy and the talent to capture the people. Why this band was for so long time out of the scene? Now they are back and transport the old wave rock - so to say the "original" - into the next millennium. UK itself for some may look as decay, but the band is very alive and fresh, likewise these "veterans" are relaxed and in best condition. Very cool show.
