The single (see STALKER reviews) foreshadowed the fact that after a lengthy waiting period Apocalyptica give us another top release with “Worlds Collide”. Harder, more aggressive, better – well, the latter includes a question mark, because is there something like a “bad” Apocalyptica album? - and more and more a “Metal band playing unusual instruments” rather than the cello trio Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Perttu Kivilaakso plus now permanent drummer Mikko Sirén. The title track alone has incredible power; another plus of those – before Apocalyptica totally unusual Metal – instruments: They produce sounds you might only achieve with a synthesizer - and still I bet it won´t sound that cool – just listen to “Ion”.
As guest singers the Finns invited Corey Taylor (Stone Sour, Slipknot) for “I´m not Jesus”, 3 Days Grace-singer Adam Gontier for “I don´t care”, Christina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) for “S.O.S. (Anything But Love)” and Rammstein´s Till Lindemann for an incredibly evil cover version of Bowie´s “Helden”.
Again Apocalyptica prove that they are virtuosos with the feeling for combining aggression and touching tunes, just listen to “Grace”, “Peace” or the Speed Metallic “Stroke”. And a Thrash attack like “Last Hope” just leaves you open mouthed. Guitarists, just try to copy that solo! Simply great!
