After having a break to recover from a demanding summer festival season, I went once again to Z7 club: The annual Heidenfest arrived at Switzerland, offering the creme-de-la-creme of Pagan Metal to Pagan music fans.

Heidevolk from Netherlands, founded in 2002, are the first on stage, and this band doesnīt have to worry about entertaining the audience tonight, a pretty big crowd is in good spirits already.

Swashbuckle It is quite rare to see a band from the USA at such Pagan festivals, but with Swashbuckle a worthy act was found who represents this genre also overseas. Those guys obviously take to Pirate Metal, because of their outfits. Admiral Nobeard and his crew, Commodore Redrum and first mate Collins seem to enjoy Carneval/Halloween all year, including the parrot-on-the-shoulder thing.

Equilibrium This band name might be familiar to any Pagan fan. The Germans became one of the most demanded acts of the genre in recent years. Unfortunately their sound here was simply disastrous. Singer Robert could hardly be heard, and the girls in the front row screamed so loud you could hardly hear the band.

Ensiferum This was the highlight of the tour, and although I am not an Ensiferum fan, but in comparison with other bands of their genre, they really know how to enhance their music with variation and a good beat. Most of the audience seemed to share this opinion, because after Ensiferum finished, the club pretty much emptied out.

Twilight of the Gods It must be devastating for a band, to see how many people are there all evening, and then hardly anybody is left when itīs their turn. Unfortunately I have to share the opinion of the audience majority, I found Twilight of the Gods totally boring. The music was too one dimensional and the light show just shadow-puppet-theater, therefore my photos arenīt better. Even the singerīs fire-spitting show elements could have been more exciting.
Summing up, this new Heidenfest-re-run didnīt work out too well. But the fans seemed to enjoy it, partly because of the high beer consumption. Some even hardly noticed that their drinking horns were way too full, so they spilled a lot. And because smoking is prohibited also in Z 7 now, thereīs no longer a nicotine aroma covering up all the sweat, beer and vomit smells. But the law is the law, even though not all the people abide by it.
