What would later become The Project Hate MCMXCIX, started out as Deadmarch a long, long time ago. The debut album of the band of mastermind Lord K. Philipson from 1998, however, has never been published because the master tapes disappeared for mysterious reason, until now… Already back then the band committed itself to the concept of progressive, very keyboard-orientated death metal with clean female vocals (here still by Mia Ståhl, who got fired for whatever reasons in 2002, nowadays the part is taken over by Jonna Enckell) and aggressive, male vocals (back then by Mikael Öberg, now Jörgen Sandström) which are, however, not very impressive on this record. Interestingly, you can´t really hear that the album is already 11 years old, only a few now outmoded hardcore elements make you frown occasionally. And, even if it once again results in bitchy comments by one “(Oh my) Lord K.” and some other nerds in the band forum, I´ll say it one more time, the music definitely evokes associations to other female fronted bands like FOR EXAMPLE The Gathering and Lacuna Coil. Which is absolutely no negative criticism, on the contrary! For a debut album, The Project Hate MCMXCIX: Initiation of Blasphemy is a well-done record, but I have to deduct at least one point because, obviously, the guys and their fans can´t handle the slightest criticism and though the songs are great they weren´t memorable enough for me back then, either.
