While Carnival is rampaging outside (in Germany) with one wagon blasting a worse version of Techno than the previous one, I decided, I´d rather enjoy some good music with headphones and keep you updated about the latest releases via Midsummer records.
Let´s start with „Orientation“ from German band Akela. The name has been derived from the lonesome wolve from Rudyard Kipling´s „The Jungle Book“. The band is still rather young and has released their first EP not too long ago (August 2010) and here we already got their debut album „Orientation“. Damn fast some might say, but when you have a look at the line-up, you can see, that some bandmembers can look back to a carreer with other bands like Dead Flesh Fashion or Having Trouble Breathing. The five guys are delivering a nice Post-Core mix, lots of variations but still compact and not chaotic – actually quite a mature album for a debut, but like mentioned before, those guys have experience and should know what they´re doing.
The album starts pretty strong with „Maps“, where the shouter shows what he´s capable of, same goes for the following rough „I Miss Being A Tree“. In the latter one however, you can recognize the first weakness this band (still) has: the clean vocals are rather weak compared to the shouts. Apart from that they find a good mix of calmer songs/parts („South Desparation“) and pretty eruptive aggressive and energetic songs. „Orientation“ delivers the whole range of feelings from songs that cause goosebumps to aggression – just like a good album in this genre should be.

They´re trying to find their own way in this currently (well, a bit long already) quite popular genre or harder tunes. It´s a hard and long way, but all in all „Orientation“ is a pretty good start for a band. Not bad, but also not perfect. They have some very good ideas and songs, but still have a bit to work on. However, since this is their debut and since they managed to show, that they´re on a good way with their ideas, I have high hopes, that great stuff is going to follow. Keep an eye on those guys!
