YIKES – which instrument should that be? I bet this is the first thing that pops up in your mind listening to the opener „Arise, Minions!“ of this Achenar EP. Keyboard, Synthesizer, extremely distorted guitar or even voice – or is it the feedback of a cellphone, too close to stereo-speakers which is behind those hectical and seemingly unstructured „noises“? When percussion comes in at „The Enthralled“, it begins to get closer to a more conventional concept of music, featuring some occasional growls. „Liberation“ offers a little radio-play, and after that you got used to those extreme sounds a bit... Then the last track „Born Into Steam“ offers a mix of growl, throat singing and clean vocals, which is finally something like a song – and even with some hypnotic appeal.
According to the official info, Achenar is a one-man-one-computer-project by Scotsman Duncan Hemingway. It´s worth to check the cover artwork to grasp the concept of this EP – and well, even though most tracks leave me a bit clue- and speechless for being too experimental, I still got somewhat hooked... so make up your mind yourselves: http://www.myspace.com/achenarband At least I can tell all Ulver Fans out there that they should put the name Achenar on their shopping lists.
