The name Amanda Somerville should be known to all fans of Avantasia, Epica and Kamelot. The blonde beauty provides her vocal talents for those bands for years. Incomprehensibly, her solo albums are less known than her cooperative efforts with other artists. Last year, for example, she published an album with Michael Kiske, Kiske/Somerville.

Trillium is then the „new baby“ of Amanda – that´s how she calls it. Trillium´s debut Alloy is packed with acoustic allures and ranges somewhere between pop, rock and metal. Sasha Paeth and Miro, with whom Amanda already worked with Kamelot, Avantasia and Epica, could be persuaded to take care of production and songwriting duties.

With her voice, Amanda manages to give the songs a great variability because she´s able to do both high and deep notes. Some compositions are very gloomy but her voice easily brightens up even the darkest of sounds. Amanda herself describes the album as a combination of different elements like good and evil. And that description fits the album very well. Orchestral parts are combined with metal guitars, choirs with Amanda´s angel-like voice – in the end, it all adds up to a perfect whole. Personally, I would have liked to hear Amanda sing with a bit more power and dirt here and there.

As a very special treat, the listener can look forward to the song Scream It because it´s a duet with none other than Jorn Lande. At least for me, it´s the absolute highlight of the album. Even though, Amanda stays more in the back and the two don´t have a single part where they sing together, the voices complement each other nicely. However, I suspect that if they sang together, it wouldn´t be a perfect match and that might have been the reason why the song turned out the way it did.

All in all, on Alloy there are twelve really well-done compositions featuring a singer, who´s very able to give personality to the songs; BUT it still can´t outshine the releases by Avantasia and co.
