Royal Hunt had a few line-up changes since their formation in 1989, especially the singers never really stayed for a long time in the band. And also for their new record Show How to Live, they decided to give the vocals to someone new. Not to someone totally new but to one of their old singers, DC Cooper, who was in the band from 1995-1998 and sang on their Moving Target and Paradox records. Band founder Andre Andersen invited Cooper back after all these years because he wanted to give the new album the original Royal Hunt sound. And it worked for the most part.
Personally, I never was a huge fan of Mark Boal´s voice and therefore I am not that sad about this change. But I would have wished for John West to come back because I still think that it was his voice that made the songs so special. Anyhow, Show How to Live presents itself in a fresh way and with pleasant compositions. However, most of the songs didn´t really burn into my mind. So, even though all the songs are of good quality with nicely performed vocals, the record probably won´t make it into my CD player very often. For me, some deepness is missing and also that certain something. But fans of Andersen´s compositions will certainly be pleased.
