Joachim Witt is an old hand at German pop history. Already active in the 60s and 70s, but his name and his music became not until the early 80s very well-known, and his song "Goldener Reiter" was one of the driving forces of the Neue Deutsche Welle. His most famous hit was 17 years later, "Die Flut" and the Bayreuth trilogy which integrated the New German hardness, furthermore the depth and complexity of classical music. Now he is back with "Dom" - the cathedral of pop music, as he calls it - and in particular the mourning for the broken love for his life companion is processed.

The work is a combination of electronic arrangements with orchestral ensembles. Some in the electronics is reminiscent of Depeche Mode and Kitaro and the delicate structure of elements from "Up" by Peter Gabriel. Witt sings mostly in deeper, slightly brittle tone, partly reciting, and puts his histrionic vocal art in the expression of dismay and pain. Language and voice conquer the same meaning as sounds. Beginning with "Gloria", he describes in this album a sacred place of music, a retreat that he - always typical for him - melts into music, his soul lives for everybody open and turned outward.

Disharmonies and hardness are not found. "Dom" is full of melancholy harmonies, beautiful melodies in a minor key which develop in “Königreich” to anthemic nature. This is not pop music for the fun, upbeat feel good and dance, but to listen and participate. The musical atmosphere is both so catchy and at times of Schlager-music character, sometimes even pathetic, but Witt´s personality and sincerity gives depth and authenticity to it. To like this personality and to participate in his sufferings processing is another matter, but surely the basis - because it is all very personal.

Witt always liked to deal with problems, inner and outer. On this CD, it is the inner, although the opulent, in Slovenia shooted VIDEO for the song "Gloria” describes an external conflict, too. Witt apparently wants his inner conflicts to be understood as metaphors for outside ones. Some on this CD - like "Das Licht im Ozean" - has almost visually cinematic character like the soundtrack to an inner landscape. And even, if at the end with the "Untergehen" the border to kitsch is exceeded, this 2012 work of Witt is deeply romantic and a very nice piece of pop with sophisticated melodies and strong cohesion.
