„From North to South live“ is Jonathan Vandebroeck alias Milow’s second live album. I like him, the Belgian with the soft voice who is so often labeled as someone who sings only soft romantic tunes. However, those who listen closely and take a look at the lyrics will soon learn that a Singer/Songwriter is hiding behind those pop tunes. A storyteller in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Willie Nile who has far more to offer than just “shalala” songs.

On this album, Milow’s very good band - Nina Babet (Backing Vocals), Tom Vanstiphout (guitar), Sjang Coenen (Bass) and Laurens Smagghe (drums) – can be heard too. They show they enjoy playing and they do it well. Apart from them, Klaas Delrue (singer of the band Yevgueni) is guesting on „The Kingdom“ and Scottish duo Martin and James are singing on „Move to Town“ and „California Rain“. Unfortunately a CD can only partly record the interactions with the audience, but this CD sounds like a live album, i.e. the audience can be heard and does not get lost in the mix. During the opener “Car Wreck At The Lake” they act as a softly singing background choir, whereas they make a big party out of “Ayo Technology”. The atmosphere of a Milow concert has been captured well and when it ends after one hour with “Where My Head Used To Be”, the listener wants to shout for an encore.

The songs were recorded at different concerts, but they sound like one. The selection of songs is good and apart from the hit singles “You Don’t Know” and “Ayo Technology” there is no repetitions of songs from the first live album. In addition to the well known songs there are also lesser known ones like “Dreamers and Renegades” from “Milow” (or the Belgian release “Coming of age”). My one criticism is that I would have loved to have a full concert on CD. Overall a beautiful album! Way to go, Jonathan!
