Eläkeläiset is definitely a great party band live. Anyone who´s ever had the opportunity to witness one of their shows has to agree. But if the joke works on your home stereo is arguable. Well, it does… Once! Sure it´s fun to check out what songs the crazy Finns have decided to cover and what they´ve done with them, but unless you´ve enjoyed a certain amount of alcoholic beverages you won´t press play again when the CD is over. The new CD "Humppasirkus" is much like every other Eläkeläiset album. 14 humppa covers of which many will become live favourites no matter what your preferred style of music is. For example Kylie, COB, Nightwish and Neil Diamond are among the "victims" this time. Especially "Nemo" by Nightwish will appeal to those who consider Tuomas Holopainen a good songwriter but can´t stand Tarja´s way of singing! The lyrics won´t really make a difference unless you know finnish (the mother tongue of humppa) but for those interested there are some translations on their website www.humppa.com. Although there aren´t as yet any lyrics from the new CD there, it should still give you a good idea of what´ going on: The glory of humppa, retired people doing humppa, not winning the lottery (and doing humppa) etc. If you´ve ever heard Eläkeläiset you already know what this album sounds like. And if you liked it you will like this one too. But no matter what you think of the album be sure to check them out live if they´re ever in your town. Guaranteed to have a good time!
