The British band „Apparition“ is quite young, founded in 2004 and now presents their debut “Drowned in Questions”.
Musically their first album can be defined as Goth-Rock but before they can compete with "Lacuna Coil", "Evanescence", "The Gathering", "Tristania" or others they still have to do a lot.
The attempt to combine gothic sounds with female vocals isn´t quite new and has become more and more popular, but Apparition cannot quite convince here. Jen´s and Annabelle´s vocals are good as long as they don´t attempt to squeeze them into higher sopranos, then it sounds thin and annoying – and unfortunately that happens very often on this album.
But what´s really annoying is the mediocre songwriting. Goth isn´t just pain and suffering, just add some cliches and get the perfect song. “Apparition” take the far too easy way, and especially if you are into good lyrics the Brits seem to one-dimensional. Just an example from the titletrack "Frozen Roses": "Frozen Roses Will Always Be Frozen, It´s Such A Shame, Cause Its Always The Same..." This is unbearable...
There´s potential, but please re-work song structures, lyrics and vocals, otherwise we drown in questions...
