Pain a.k.a. Peter Tägtgren, together with his hired help, recorded two live shows last year in Poland that are now on a DVD called Live Is Overrated together with two bootleg live songs from Tavastia Club in Helsinki, Finland, and seven videos. Not to mention an interview, biography, photo gallery etc. that should keep the fans happy until the next Pain studio album (which we hear Peter has already started working on as well as a cover album… while he´s touring with his other band Hipocrisy! Busy guy!). The main live parts are from the Metalmania Festival where as the rest is recorded at a TV studio gig in Krakow.

The stage at the Metalmania Festival seems to create the perfect scenery for Pain. It´s big and dark with flashing white strobe lights cutting through the deep blue haze. This eight song set contains some of the bigger hits such as Dancing With The Dead, Same Old Song and Shut Your Mouth.

The TV studio is the complete opposite. With it´s colourful lights it´s more like the setting for an 80´s hard rock video. Most memorable of the six songs is the Beatles cover Eleanor Rigby.
The biggest problem with Pain is that most songs are very alike. Even if the tempos vary you still get the feeling that the band keeps on pounding the same riffs over and over again. No song stands out as even the catchiest of them drown in the dullness. Pain sounds like D.A.D. was playing industrial metal. Nothing wrong with D.A.D. but if all of their songs where played with the same formula it would sound like this… And Peter actually bears quite a resemblance to the front-man Jesper Binzer!

If you´re anything of a fan of Pain you´d be stupid not to get this DVD as the band probably won´t do anything as comprehensive for a long time. For the rest this DVD might be worth checking out if a friend has it, but unless Pain has made an impression so far this will hardly make you see the light!
