Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) is King Midas! Any sound he makes turns to gold! Aviv Geffen is one of Israel´s biggest rock stars, who is also known for his activism for peace in the middle-east. Blackfield is the collaboration of these two fascinating gentlemen and after two albums they have now released a live DVD titled simply ”NYC - Live In New York City”.
The DVD is recorded at the Bowery Ballroom in (well, you guessed it) New York earlier this year and features 18 songs from the two albums Blackfield and Blackfield II, which was released in February of 2007. For those who aren´t familiar with Blackfield the main thing to know is that if you like Porcupine Tree you will enjoy Blackfield as well. The band was formed in the beginning of the decade after Aviv Geffen invited Porcupine Tree to do some shows in Israel. Wilson and Geffen immediately hit it off and before too long they had already wrote a song together and eventually things led to Blackfield becoming a real band. The music is written by the two especially for this band, except for a few songs originally recorded in Hebrew by Geffen.
Even if you haven´t heard the band before “NYC” is, despite being a live recording, an excellent way to get to know their music. The sound, which is available in 5.1 surround , is great and even if there´s not too much to look at on stage the camera captures the live concert feeling quite well. The songs are beautiful and very well played, as has to be expected from any Wilson project, and even if Wilson nor Geffen have the most unique voices on the planet there´s a passion in the performance that can be felt right through the TV screen.
If you´re in to beautiful, mellow and harmonic music, Blackfield is your band. As much as I love Porcupine Tree I really wish these guys will find time to continue with this project as well. And I think I´m going to have to get acquainted with mr. Geffens work as well…
