Those Club shows are inevitable part of Tuska festival, and this time the program before and during the festival weekend presented you with a decision problem: Many interesting bands played at the same time at different locations (e.g. Teräsbetoni at Tavastia, Ajattara and Deathchain at Nosturi on Saturday). The classic “flipping a coin” might have been a way for many to make up their minds...

It was a bit easier for me on Tuska Warm Up Thursday: While Timo Rautiainen und Viikate drew a huge audience to Tavastia, the show at Virgin Oil attracted me more, because of the headliner...

First Cause For Effect rather tested my nerves. “Progressive” does not even roughly describe this duo. Tuomo (bass&voc) and Ari (drums) play complex Extreme Grindcore with Free Jazz influx – a combination that immediately triggers my flight reflex. But especially the musicians in the audience appeared fascinated, the band received many cheers and sold several CDs.

Dark Filth Fraternity played music much more for my taste and had a familiar face in their line-up: Panu Willman, former Before The Dawn member, now running his own project with brother Riku (dr), Henri Räsänen (b) and Heikki Iso-Sipilä (git, voc). Melancholic, very melodic, harmonies not only regarding the voices but also the guitars, dreamy parts and heavy riffs, complex songs but not too experimental. Somehow an association with Alice In Chains popped up, plus Doom and much more Metal, but why don´t you just visit the band homepage and find your own definition :)

Mustan Kuun Lapset were much easier to define: Black Metal, but the variation that I like, brutal yet still melodious, Folk elements and epic parts, a sound that rather reminds of old Amorphis than those genre-stars Cradle Of Filth. The “Black Moon Children” turned the filled-up Virgin Oil in a single mosh pit. Another Finnish band that you should keep an eye on.

Swallow The Sun entered stage around 1:00 because of many delays, and that was not the only reason why they felt pretty battered. Only a few hours before they had returned from a German festival, and right after this show they had to fly back to play another one. Mastermind Juha was convinced “this will be a lousy show”... yet I just want to know how the now so busy band defines “lousy”. Well, there were a few feedbacks, and sometimes a tone that did not quite fit, but otherwise a flawless energetic 1,5 hour Doom Metal show for an ecstatic audience, again with Tinuviel´s guest appearance, and including a rarely performed “Silence of the Womb” in the set list. Attempting to get photos was a suicide mission. A great show, and I assume now even the band lists this one as “good” in their statistics. Real problems should follow immediately afterwards, when the airline lost their instruments and they had to perform their next German festival gig with borrowed equipment. But I bet even that was not that bad as they felt it was... I recommend to check them out in November as support for Amorphis (see STALKER tour dates)!
