The story: A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity´s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home. (source: facebook.com/AfterEarth)
The movie: Oy my, what cheesiness! Daddy is a rock hard, fearless hero and alpha male, while his son is a fear-filled, shy loser, who grows balls in a life-or-death situation and makes daddy proud. That and a few man-eating monsters make up to become a film, which was screwed up by Shymalan. You can see the jokes coming a mile away and the dialogue is just as predictable and as such, there are no surprises. Even Will and Kayden Smith can´t save this film, which should disappear into the dust of time. The technical aspects were okay. Finally no 3D, but why is it so difficult to animate natural, realistic animals? I had to laugh about the badly animated wolf in 300 –and in “Aftermath” it´s not one bit better. The earth of the future, the flora, the spaceships, clothing design ect. was all good, but the animals are ridiculous –fantasy here or there: feathers should look like feathers and fur like fur.
Conclusion: Whoever likes semi-good animation, obvious allegories and a lot of cheesiness will love this flick. Those, who get easily annoyed or bored should save their money.
