The 60s in Germany, especially the generation of 68, were just slogans I could not really relate to, until recently. A time in which many young people made their first experience with sex, drugs and Rock´n´Roll. Therefore my parents immediately knew the name Uschi Obermaier, which I had never heard before.
„EIGHT MILES HIGH“ is the filmography of a generation´s sex and style icon. Topmodel and globetrotter with her own camping bus, a career that many wished to have and finally imitated.
She ends up in the legendary „Kommune 1“, falls in love with communard Rainer Langhans (Matthias Schweighöfer) and they start a relationship. But Uschi does not really fit into the group, those ideals are not hers. Langhans e.g. promotes open relationship, yet becomes jealous when Uschi does the same and has affairs with the Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and the guitarist Keith Richards (Alexander Scheer).
A time begins in which she lives through cover shootings, the start of a movie career, the Kommune and groupie parties, and her urge for freedom grows stronger and stronger. She hears from the famous Hamburg Kiez-Barowner and globetrotter Dieter Bockhorn (David Scheller), meets him and falls in love with him. Bockhorn plans to travel the world with her in a self-customized luxury bus, and togehter they leave their past behind.
The film appeals in the first half, turns out to be quite funny. The life in the Kommune, the Stones and Uschi´s peculiar way makes it interesting, giving a glimpse of a special life in a special time.
Natalia Avelon plays very realistically, as well as Matthias Schweighöfer and David Scheller, and you feel like being introduced to the real people.
The more dramatical part with the escape from Germany (Bockhorn is in debt and has to leave Hamburg) and globetrotting in the bus is slightly lengthy and cannot compete with the energy of the first part.
A woman whose life moved many people in Germany, but still the film doesn´t feel that „wild“, so that her life could be an influence for others in the same way.
