This 60 minute Fan Film was inspired by the Lord of the Rings-Appendixes, just like "The Hunt For Gollum" presented by STALKER here and produced in the UK. A low budget production that took several years to complete, the entire cast and crew - about 250 people! - were giving their services for no financial gain. The shooting took place from 2006 - 2008, and since december 2009 Tolkien- and Fantasy Fans can check out the result.
The "Born of Hope" story previews the LOTR trilogy and tells the story of the Dúnedain, the Rangers of the North, before the return of the King. A scattered people, the descendents of storied sea kings of the ancient West, struggle to survive in a lonely wilderness as a dark force relentlessly bends its will toward their destruction. Yet amidst these valiant, desperate people, hope remains. A royal house endures unbroken from father to son... Tolkien fans naturally know that Arathorn (Christopher Dane) und Gilraen (Beth Aynsley) are Aragorn´s parents, and naturally one of the plots is their not so simple and uncomplicated love story. There´s also a bit of humour... but the major focus is conflicts and combats the Dúnedain have to endure, and no more to give away, although the "insiders" might know the story anyway.
The film presents in a pretty plausible manner how the Dúnedain might have lived, the detailed and lovingly environment (locations, e.g. West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village & Country park, Epping Forest, Clearwell Caves, Stockwood Iron Age Village; costumes, set) adds to this impression. Nothing to complain regarding fight scenes or the acting - as many professional actors thankfully put themselves to the task, and for free (director Kate Madison is also in front of the camera as "Elgarain").
Yet some scenes could have been tighteded by editing, or cuts in the script (written by Alex K. Aldridge), and some special effects are too obvious, therefore rather take off than add to the fun. But anyway, none of points of criticism should keep you from watching - hey, it´s all for free on the internet!! Yet donations are welcome... Naturally, A MUST for Tolkien-Fans.
