Movie soundtracks can be slightly frustrating if you have not seen the film (yet), and also here the pleasure has its limits. Admittedly composer Hans Zimmer manages again to picture (acoustically) the fantastic Pirate world, sometimes a track makes you see a wild fencing duel or a tottering Captain Jack Sparrow. Without story context it will be an emotional roller coaster ride, beginning quite sinister, after the fragile boy´s voice a pirate choir later joins in “Hoist The Colours”. This is the only vocal contribution, Zimmer focuses on instruments. Far-Eastern folk leads finally to the well known title theme (“Singapur”), and this kind of sound dominates this CD: A dramatic and bombastic orchestra plus some melancholy plus some horror, and of course also humour is added (“Multiple Jacks”). A gag that made me smile is this Ennio Morricone tribute at “Parlay”. Yet there is information about the background of this in the otherwise extensive booklet, with anecdotes by Mark Wherry and many photos from the set.
