The Finnish Kalevala Metallers fared no better than other national stars (The 69 Eyes, Children Of Bodom) because they had to play two shows consecutively just to fulfil the demand. Fans had even arrived from Oulu and felt lucky just to get hold of the last tickets for this “public rehearsal”...

Naturally the club soon turned into overcrowded Sauna. Die-hard fans who had secured their places in the front even two hours before the show started, had been wise to do so. Because later you could hardly manage to get into the hall... spotted in the audience also musician colleagues, e.g. Henkka (Children Of Bodom), Markus (Ensiferum) or Tuomas and Anette, Nightwish.

Spirits were high way before the gig started, and when Amorphis entered stage about midnight, the crowd simply went nuts. Every single song was loudly welcomed, so frontman Tomi Joutsen didn´t have to talk much in between – you couldn´t have heard it anyway.

And the band surely deserved the cheers, they played and energetic show, and you could feel the fun they had on stage, Tomi´s locks were almost constantly flying through the air. He did not only impress with his vocal abilities – his energy and charisma also affected people who were forced to follow most of the show via monitors in the club aula. Even there you could just stand and watch like under a ban, you didn´t want to miss a second... Going for a leak? Nah, later perhaps...

The new album had just come out this very day, therefore Amorphis rather focused on older material, sort of their back catalogue´s “best of” including ancient hits like “Sign From The North Side” (“The Karelian Isthmus”) and “Into Hiding” or “Black Winter Day” from the legendary “Tales From The Thousand Lakes”. The new CD was represented only by a handful of songs, e. g. the chilling title track “Silent Waters” - much heavier than on the album, so that Tomi´s voice was almost too much in the background – and “Shaman”. When Tomi asked “Do you need a break?” the audience naturally answered No, and they could finally shout along with “Cast Away”. Yet you had to wait for the encore part to hear “House Of Sleep” and one of my faves “Against Widows”. And because people still wanted more, Amorphis came back once more with “Summer´s End”. But that was it – 1,5 hours that went by way too quickly! Great! Check those guys out on their Europe Tour in November!
