With deep gothic sadness I must note that bands like this hardly ever visit Finland, and if they do, most likely it´s for club Schatten or Lumos Gothic Festival in Tampere, or at Synapsi and occasionally at Gloria Club. Yet recently the inflow of electro/goth acts encourages certain optimism for the dark scene´s development of this small country with a rather limited scene of dark electro. For example Nine Inch Nails came twice last year, then VNV Nation, Rabia Sorda from Mexico and Bruno Kramm from Germany, Das Ich, too, and not some small clubs no one has heard of, but actual big venues and to my surprise – full house almost every time! And moreover, the house danced! A definite progress since my arrival here, and I am optimistic and already looking forward to what else this year´s party calendar has in store.

This synthpop Covenant must not be confused with its Norwegian industrial fellow The Kovenant. This band comes from Sweden and despite such convenient geography, is not a frequent visitor on Finnish stage. So perhaps that was the reason that at first the singer Eric kept on communicating in Swedish, and however little could be understood, the band is still very lovable and extremely danceable, so language was no barrier. During the show we also established that the city the band comes from (Helsingborg) translates to Finnish as “Narrow Water”, and so someone from the floor couldn´t resist to comment that now we have a loveboat between the two countries by the means of Covenant. Once again, the band was reassured of how much they are loved here.

The male trio is so stylish and slick: suits and ties of well-combined colors, polished boots and neatly gelled hair are Covenant´s trademark, which makes them very appreciated by those corporate Goths with strict dress sense and all the pinstripes, but also the attitude – the audience at Nosturi were acting very cool, even on the dance floor.

The band was scheduled for a late start, and the first 2,5 hrs were designating to what the Germans call ‘electronic body massacre´ – the DJ did a very eclectic set, only very few actually danced. The venue looked empty until the band´s intro started, then suddenly Nosturi filled up in no time! And when the band itself enjoys their own performance so much, dancing and improvising along, having their own party and celebration on stage, this energy spreads and captivates the audience immediately. So no wonder that with the first sounds the floor audience jumped up and moved unstoppably until the very end.

The band´s setlist covered all the hits, so nothing else I could have possibly asked for! Special highlights were ‘Ritual Noise´ that Eric announced as his personal favorite, ‘Stalker´ which with the venue´s acoustics came out very powerful and upbeat as well as ‘20Hz´. And of course ‘We Stand Alone´, however unfitting the lyrics were in the context of such concert when the floor was completely in unison with the stage and the band, ‘alone´ would be the last adjective to use. Covenant gives out very good vibe, how they act among each other and with its listeners. Eric was unstoppably bouncing up and down, playing around with his fellows on stage and whenever possible, giving his microphone into the first rows, who gladly screamed the verses and sung along. Eric himself was very excited and grateful, as to the fans as to his band – almost after each song he hugged the guys and passed them complements. Very sweet and charming! The keyboarder Joakim was very active himself, barely keeping his hands on the keys and whenever he could, jumping upfront to sing, scream or simply dance.

For 22 € you´ve really got a great worth of quality, excellent dancing and great karma – that I could feel all over my danced-out boots, walking out from Nosturi.
