Hamburg will always been a good place to conquer the world from. At least, that’s what it seems like when you consider all the release parties with concerts that are taking place here lately. It has become customary for Spinefarm and Regain bands to set the sound of their new albums loose on mankind here for the first time. In Helsinki, the new album Verisäkeet couldn’t be admired until a week later. The Headbanger´s Ballroom doesn’t have an excellent reputation as far as sound is concerned, but usually it’s ok in the end.

The support band was called „Children Of Wrath“, but I only caught the last few songs they played, and though they are from Hamburg, his was the first time I ever heard of them. From what I saw and heard, it seemed to me like they are youngsters, who can’t really look angry, but who really try, playing melodic death metal with thrashy passages. Not bad, but it needs some work (what I heard of it, anyway).

It was crowded but not as crowded as I had expected. A lot of journalists, some photographers and a nice, small mosh pit were waiting, when Moonsorrow enetered the stage. I couldn’t repress a smile, when the band showed up onstage wearing the same mud like make up they have on in the promo pics.It looked cool on almost all of them, but Henri looked like he ate choclate cookies with his hands tie to his back. I don’t think this cute factor wasn’t entirely intentional. However, the smile disappeared quickly when the first notes of „Sankarihauta” and “ Karhunkynsi” sounded and it was replaced by appreciative nodding. The band managed to ctapult the listeners to another time, with thier presence and catchy melodies. Next to Ville Sorvali´s characteristic voice, the other musicians certainly didn’t fade into the background and they all played their way to the foreground now and then – unlike some Finnish bands with strong front men. Ville´s big brother and guitarist, Henri (formerly to be found behind the keys as TrollHorn in Finntroll) sang the chorals with second guitarist Mitja Harvilahti, and Marko Tarvonen behind the drums and Markus Eurén at the keyboard also played flawlessly as far as I could tell. The set was very relaxed, thanks to a very self-confident Ville, who was clearly having a good time with the audience and responded to calls like: Don’t drink water, drink beer!“ by grinning and saying: "That's no water, it's vodka!". The set surprisingly consisted of a lot of songs from their previous album „Suden Uni“ as well as songsfrom „Verisäkeet“. They only played two of the five songs from Verisäkeet: „Karhunkynsi“ and „Pimeä“. The advantage was, that the audience could (more or less) sing along to the older songs. Especially „Kivenkantaja“ was well supported vocally by the audience. After 80 minutes, they played the bonus track off the Suden Uni album called „Tulkaapa Äijät“, after which Moonsorrow took their leave and went off with the label manager of Spinefarm to enjoy the night life of Hamburg. Hangover may come over you!
